The past relaxed (instead of the past tense)

Introduction:

So I’ve relocated to Palma de Mallorca for a while, having been granted a stay of absence after serving out my time in Central London, England. Twelve months for my sins!!! Did I really commit that many wrongs??? Or was it more that those wrongs were wrongs from a past life, or all of my lives long-since-gone before… and, as I have often felt; even more so recently: in this life it was my choice, my destiny, to attone for and fix them all?

I’ve sensed since way back, since when I could first remember… that I came here to resolve; that I am the one to put a stop to the continuation of a great many things:

β€’ the things that impacted me growing up,
β€’ and the things that impact me still…

And I’ve tried to, as much as I could.

Yet there are boulders that remain, walls that will not fall; patterns and behaviours that, consciousness and open, actively working upon, even I am guilty of repeating. We are all, to some extent, mini-me’s of those who made us. They mini-me’s of those who made them. And if the ‘me’ who planted the seed of your family tree was a ‘me’ beset by complex and neurosis: it stands to reason hundreds of years on, you too are a ‘me’ beset by complex and neurosis. But we can try. And there is both peace and joy to be found in the process and the journey of trying.

~

Action:

1. What are your emotional blocks, triggers and issues…?
2. What would you most like to resolve?
3. What stressful bad or ugly would you – if you had a magic wand
   like Hermione Granger…
like to erase or make go away?

Personally, I can think of many… But this is about you.

So have a think, write it down, make it solid: so that you can then (with it as a point of focus, a thing to still and then fixate upon) take it and dissect it and pull it into pieces. Apart things are easier to face than those that remain rigid and solid, containing less ferocity in their energy than those left untouched. And dissecting is the first part of the process of unravelling and healing.

There are those who would protest to this level of detail and perhaps protracted length of analysis, asserting that it is better to heal in blindness and ignorance, claiming that pain, instead, can be removed simply by painting by numbers: this problem requires this solution, that problem that… And it can. Only in my experience – accumulated over many years with the help of both my own curiousity and exertion and the help of many experienced practitioner and therapist – pain removed without clarity and dialogue, without knowledge of ‘what’ and ‘why’, is pain that leaves leaving a root. A garden can be weeded, sprayed with chemicals, ploughed, etc… but unless the source of the thing you are trying to remove is found and then extracted, the bit that’s left is inclined to recover and, shortly thereafter, regrow. How often do we tend to a headache only to have it return? Or treat an aching limb to a massage to have it feel equally as bad the following day?

Only recently I addressed a pain in my chest, a tension and a tightness that had no business being there. And, because I attempted to appease and release it a novel way, a way that was different to anything that I had read about or experienced before (part of a personal experiment, an experiment to further growth), it went and then returned, reduced but not (as desired, as required for the continuation of my emotional wellbeing and overall physical ease, entirely absent. Roots are stubbornly inclined and have a tendency to remain hidden in order to re-emerge, putting forth shoots that effortlessly grow back into bushes and trees.

So:

β€’ find it, name it, own it, claim it,
β€’ reach out and touch it,
β€’ pick it up and hold it in you hands,
β€’ look down upon it and smile, thinking only of gentleness and feeling only love,
β€’ speak to it as if it were a child… and, in a journal or a notebook,
  write down its reply.

Then, if you can:

β€’ place that book over your heart and press it up against your chest with
  both palms facing down,
β€’ then sit or lie comfortably and close your eyes and still your breathing,
β€’ inhale and exhale deeply – visualising white light entering, black light
leaving, focusing your thoughts on cleaning and clearing, letting go of
  all undesirable things.

I like to see the white light as Heaven-sent, the black as a long but obedient serpent (Harry Potter style). With my mind’s eye concentrated on connecting – to God, to Angels; to fairies, friendly spirits and other benevolent beings – I draw down the power of the Universe and fill myself up. Think of it like a download of unconditional love, with enough magic and mojo thrown in to completely heal and clear you of everything that is antagonistic to your essential nature and highest good. If it helps, you can picture the white light as water or rain and (if you are good at visualising), even feel it as it pours onto and over you, covering you from head to foot.

This is a great daily exercise which:

β€’ with practice and devotion,
β€’ with focused attention and genuine desire,

…yields big results. Especially if combined with other techniques:

β€’ music
β€’ essential oils
β€’ crystals
β€’ flower essences
β€’ herbal infusions
β€’ light
β€’ movement and breathwork
β€’ smudging…

Music can do wonders for the soul and, alone, be excellent therapy.

Smell is a powerful stimulent, different essential oils shifting and releasing unwanted emotions and energetic imbalances.

You can use crystals to address specific concerns, like exhaustion, grief, anger, anxiety, pain…

A stick of incense, palo santo wood or sage can clear negative energy from either you or a space, removing anything that has become stuck. We collect energy from every interaction and experience. Both good and bad, it all impacts us and, if ignorant to that fact or else dismissive of it, we can become anxiety-riddled, sick, toxic and polluted, without ever reaslising that it’s got very little to do with us.

I like to put essential oils on my wrist points, inhaling as I draw my attention inwards; using them as an aid to relaxing and slowing down, as well as a tool for inward focus and an awareness of how each separate part of me feels.

I also like to light a candle and dedicate it to specific guides, asking them to protect me while I work.

And I have a prayer blanket, created with love, that covers me.

What you choose is up to you and it will be different for every person.

Trust your intuition and follow what you are drawn towards. Your body knows best. Listen to that ‘belly’ brain, the one just above your navel, combining it with what you hear and feel in your heart. And don’t overthink, because it’s that brain, the thinking brain, that got you into trouble in the first place. No offence to the ego (bless it and all that… it means well), but most of what ails us is there as a result of that conscious part attempting to control and maintain authority over the older, deeper, more authentic soft and squishy parts underneath.

So:

β€’ honour your inner baby and talk to your inner child,
β€’ love your difficult and often overwhelmed adult,

…picking up the crumbs of potential and possibility and following where they lead, remaining, as you do so, open and receptive to all manner of majesty and magic.

There’s no place like homeΒ

It’s the 2nd of December and all of a sudden Christmas is just a handful of days away, or that’s how it feels. I have been in Mallorca since Friday and am slowly settling in – adjusting to the temperature, the scenery, the way of life; putting long held things down and letting go of things that are tight. The people are friendly and I feel welcome wherever I go. The sky is blue and in the centre of the day it’s warm enough to sit outside. The streets are quiet, empty… and I do not have to clean my shoes each time I go out. There is less pollution. Whites stay white. Food is cheaper, fresher and mostly organic. Apples taste how apples should taste. Seafood is common and it is possible to eat out often without guilt. I am eating out. I do not feel guilty. I feel restless though and I am finding this hard to accept. I cannot sit quietly or do what I usually do; there are fears and thoughts filling my mind with the kind of things that go bump in the night.

I miss my home with its familiar surroundings – my pictures, my drawings, my ornaments, my Fimo unicorns and knitted mice, my crystals, my oracle cards, my pendulums and lucky charms, a tea for every day of the month, four alternatives to milk; gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, lactose-free products; a wardrobe full of choice, drawers full of excitement, a bed with a mattress and sheets that have only ever been mine, a brand new everything inside an old but renovated space… I miss the bathroom I at first disliked with its traditional sink and cracked white tiles, the floors whose scratches I hid beneath rugs, the neighbour upstairs and his heavy feet, the washing machine whose spin cycle woke everything up. I miss the central heating, the insulation, the open space and tall windows letting in the light. I miss it’s countless memories and the special things I did there. I could sit still and calm in that space for hours, content to be alone. I was warm. I was relaxed and safe. I am a creature of habit. I do not like to deviate from or break with routine; it tortures me, from the centre out, undoing all that I have put in place, unpicking all that I have set down, challenging my beliefs.

Resisting the urge to rewind, burying myself deep in chocolate, tea and toast, over-sized omelettes and glasses of local wine, I try to love my hat, focusing on the importance of finishing that. But even while the comfortable click and clack of my needles soothes me, the simplicity of the project, the superficiality of its journey after that, fails to really get beneath.

Being mindful, I remind myself of how normal all of this is, how ‘okay’ it is to be a little spikey. In acting out I am speaking for the child within, the hidden part that is most often ignored. Like a dog, all she wants is a warm lap, a familiar space, a routine that caters to her every need and lots and lots of attention. Like an infant, she wants to play, existing solely in a space of love, laughter and light.

Maybe I will buy paper and coloured pens to paint my story out? Maybe I will buy thread and felt to stitch it down? I’d rather go for a walk on the beach, attempt to meditate with the sand on my skin, visit the cathedral, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, peruse the local markets, sightsee, explore, delving into each and every space, feeling, touching, tasting, really getting a sense of it. But I am trapped in another’s routine, rushing and rushing then sitting and sitting, counting the hours, avoiding the minutes, longing only for bedtime when, finally, I can shut it all out.

This will pass, as everything passes; for there is nothing in life but change. We cannot still. We cannot cling. We cannot stop, no matter how much we might want to. And in the meantime – while I grin and bear and occasionally grimace and growl – it is best to view it as a meditation, the acquiring of a new level of acceptance, patience and self-love.

Close to my chest

Reacquainting with old friends,
I stand confused,
unsure of who I am greeting,
twin locks of gold spinning before my eyes,
almost identical in nature.

And yet, there is a discrepancy –
of gender, of age –
if only I could see fit to figuring it out.

Picking my words carefully,
I say β€˜hello’ from a distance,
one step removed,
waiting for those on the other side
to take the lead.

Green and Gold

I have nearly completed my Christmas tree and I’m so proud, waxing about her as if she were a newborn child. Given the brevity of time before me and the new terrain, the landscape of ‘different’ in which to source from, she’s a work of art. A patchwork of randomly sourced objects, lovingly put together with an attention to detail and adherence to certain rules – like each additional adornment must be serviceable all year, for life not just for December…, she presents a whole that even I with my obsessive need for perfection cannot readily unpick.

There is a velour cat with a bubblegum pink ribbon; a perspex diamond accommodating two mis-adventuring mice (one, with her purple jacket and hat, reminding me of my grandma) a child petting her pet, who just so happens to be a beautiful chocolate-brown spaniel; a hippo in a tutu attempting a pirouette; a moose holding a snow-clad tree – tiny in comparison to his rotund self; an eccentric giraffe displaying, in his outstretched hand, an umbrella (perhaps to remind me of England and all of the rain I incurred there); a felted tiger straight out of ‘Where the Wild Things are’, a similar felted fox and kangaroo, part of a matching collection; a terracotta angel painted Mallorcan style; a ceramic squirrel with a hollow centre and a rabbit carved from local wood. All that’s missing is the star.

Sitting at the very top, visible from every angle… the star cannot just ‘do’, she has to outshine. So while I’ve seen passable solutions and the occasional ‘blow me away with their beauty but also with their price’ attempts at twinkling joviality, I haven’t yet seen anything that works without breaking the budget (which is also one of the rules!) apart. But I believe… : in the solution, in the ‘right’ one, in the five-pointed declaration that is made specifically for me. When the Universe is ready (as like with everything else), she will extend her palm and yield. And if for some unforeseen reason she will not explain, she, the universe and all of the powers that accompany her… deem I am not to have a talisman, a gem to shine in the night, to ward off the darkness… then so be it. There are reasons greater than me.

And maybe it’s about being flexible in the face of restriction. Or happy amongst the uncompromising walls of limitation. Or about only seeing what you want to see.

Living from the one hastily-packed suitcase, a sitting room full of boxes it would be unwise to unpack; making do with another’s curious ornaments and furniture – a glass bowl full of plastic fruit, a black sofa with rose embellished cushions, threadbare rugs that house more beach than dust, a table and chairs with green velvet seats (seriously?), a kitchen that supports the making of tea but actively dissuades the creation of anything else, appliances that make their grievances known, usually throughout the night; bedsheets that itch and towels that scratch, tiles that bear the mark of generations and shift beneath passing feet: there is a lot of accepting and reimagining involved.

But like with boxes and randomly placed objects; unfolded clothes, decaying flowers and unwashed cups: all manner of unwanted but immovable things… After a while they cease to exist, the eye cleverly distorting what the mind lacks the conscious desire and active need to see.

imageSo really it’s just my tree that stands out, projecting beauty, colour, positive energy, fun, enchantment, love and pride. Greeting my return like a faithful friend, she adds a little warmth and welcome to an otherwise cold and inanimate space.

Learning to dance again

Opening a closed heart can be dangerous;
especially if you have not adequately prepared.
Just look at Pandora and what happened to her!
In the end though, there is no other way:
denial only prolonging what will one day find a way out.

Navigating extreme feelings –
emotions that threaten to overwhelm
the casing in which they reside –
I battle the urge to run backwards,
something external holding me to the floor.

Placing hands on parts I have for years now
happily suppressed – suffocating, starving,
ignoring… until they appeared to die –
I listen as they wake back up:
hungry, angry, needy.

Tears fall, sobs escape, screams wrench
and I keen like a mother grieving an infant: open, raw, exposed.
And while it might take a while,
for the denial runs deep:
even this small freedom is a respite.

In subtle ways

Standing in the shadows, I cannot see you.
Walking behind me, I miss the help you give.
Yet you are there; people attest to this.

When the sky is grey,
when the land is wet,
when the air is cold and crisp;

when my body aches,
when my heart is heavy,
when my mind is full of clutter:

a flash of colour,
a burst of song,
an unbidden smile,

a stranger’s kindness,
a shaft of light,
a falling feather…

In subtle ways on countless days
you light my journey
and I feel your love.

Busses and bikes

In Australia it was pedestrians and skateboards. In Mallorca it was sports cars and yachts. In London it’s bodies, busses and bikes; one cannot move for tripping over the things. The amount of brainpower, of concentration… it takes to navigate a couple of streets; to walk from position A to position B without something heinous or nefarious manifesting, is actually quite exhausting. For me, especially. Sensitive to the environment, to the ebb and flow of its energies: these things pierce the skin, going deep. At times, I actually feel traumatised by it. And often I pine for my other life – the old one, the one left behind. I’m pining now, as rain invades yet another day and July steps even closer to its inevitable end.

So how does one cope in an environment where the pace is ‘all go’ and the attitude aggressive and heavy? How do you walk through the swell of the heaving thicket without incurring misfortune or injury? Lost to phones and worries and work, bills to pay and deadlines to meet… today’s commuters are imprisoned, bereft of awareness to anything ‘other’, ‘external’ or ‘else’.

I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, because it’s solution is vital to my health. My body needs movement, light, air. My mind needs change of environment, scenery, interaction with self and head. My soul needs contact with the world outside my flat: new things, familiar things, things with happy energy, things that light me up. And yet these ‘lights’, especially lately, have started to really hurt, causing me to suffer even as I repair.

So I’ve thought and I’ve fought and I’ve researched in depth and I’ve trialed and tested as well and I’ve discovered some things, which, although by no means a cure, are useful as both bandage and a shield.

My discoveries are as follows… Feel free to dip in and out and use at will, and to respond with suggestions, alternatives and feedback. This is important work and I have a genuine interest in its solution.

~

BEFORE STEPPING OUT

Things to do before leaving the sanctity of your residence.

The Protective Bubble: Every morning before you go out, take a moment to go inside and ground yourself. Begin by closing your eyes and sinking into your body, sending your feet into the floor, your head into your heart. Now, taking several deep, focused breaths, relax any tension and release any thoughts. Next, imagine a bubble of pink light above your head, big enough to fit you. Pull it down over your body until it surrounds you and then push it out several inches. Surround it in a thin layer of silver, more like a coating, a skin. Then draw an even-armed cross in front, behind, to your left and to your right, above your head and below your feet. Make these crosses gold. Feel the energy of the pink bubble, the protection of the silver skin and the love of the gold crosses. Absorb this feeling and you know that you are safe.

The Impenetrable Cloak: Call upon Archangel Michael (or, if angels aren’t your thing, who or whatever works for you: your guardian, your guide, your spirit animal, your higher self, the power of universe, the love of the earth, the grace of God, etc…) Ask to borrow his (or their) cloak. Picture it wrapped around you, covering your body from your neck to your feet. Give it a hood. Pull it up. See yourself standing in front of a mirror in the cloak. Know that while you wear this cloak, nothing can touch you, nothing can get in. Strengthen it daily and it will be like your new best friend. And give thanks for it too. And give it back after each outing, that way you remain respectful to the process and the gift.

The Enlightened One: Sit in your ‘special‘ space. Play some gentle music. Light a candle or some incense. Close your eyes and travel inside. Slow your breath, clear your mind, ground and centre your body. Remain until you feel calm and clear and ‘zen‘.

The Extra Enlightened One: Repeat the above. Then continue as follows… Imagine a hoover or a hose positioned high above your head coming down to you from heaven(or from your ‘place-of-choice-most-sacred’, if you are not a heaven fan). Allow it to enter through your crown, to turn itself on, and to start to slowly suck, gently removing any dark or heavy energy, anything that is unwanted and stuck. Permit it to continue, moving deeper into until it has cleaned every undesirable out. Then switch the button, which you now see positioned on the nosle, transforming the ‘In’ of the breathe into an ‘Out’. See a stream of white light emerge – like a jet of water if you were watering a garden. Send it into every organ, every appendage, every ligament and cell. Sense it filling you up: with energy, with charge, with power. Finish with the ‘Impenetrable Cloak’ or the ‘Protective Bubble’.

~

AFTERWARDS OR IN THE EVENT

Things to do upon returning to your residence, arriving in another space, or in an emergency ‘spur of the moment’ moment.

Shaking it off: When animals experience a shock or anything unpleasant, they shake. Watch and you will see. Dogs do it all the time, the small ones especially. This is because they have an awareness of their regulatory system and a knowledge of what their bodies need. And, unlike us, they are grounded and exist in the moment. Like dogs, we too can apply this practice and there are several ways. Choose whichever one appeals the most, feels the best to you, or fits your environment.

1. The simple shake: Imagine you are nervous or experiencing a caffeine crash. Recall how certain parts of your body trembled of their own accord. Take this remembering and apply it (the shake without the emotion) to whatever part of your body feels traumatised, challenged or tense, thinking about the incident that caused you to feel this way. Shake/tremble either consciously or unconsciously until it feels like it has all been discharged. You can speak or remain silent, be gentle or be rough. It’s improvised: do whatever fits, the freer the better.

2. The full-on shake: Do the same as above: just up the energy, allowing your entire body to express itself; revealing not only the tension and trauma of the moment but that which has also been absorbed and suppressed. Let go: spilling the years, clearing the backlog. Keep going for as long as you are comfortable to do so. Make it as big or as small, as loud or as quiet, as external or as internal as you like. Sometimes, just imagining it works. Listen to your body and give it what it needs. Then thank it by giving it a hug or placing your hands over your heart, feeling the power of your own self-love.

3. The ‘real deal’: This one is the actual exercise shown on the TRE website. Start by preparing your space: a blanket on the floor, a pillow at its head, closed curtains or blinds, low or no lights, a candle or incense, music.

                  Step 1: the forced surrender

β€’ find a clear space of wall
β€’ stand with your back against it
β€’ squat as if you are sitting on a chair
β€’ hold this position for 1-2 minutes or as long as it takes to respond

Note: it is supposed to hurt, you are supposed to shake, this is the point.

                  Step 2: the passive surrender

β€’ lie on your back with your legs bent, feet together
β€’ allow your knees to fall open as wide as they wish to go
β€’ relax your arms, letting them rest by your hips, several
                    inches from your body
β€’ have your palms facing up, hands slightly curled
β€’ allow quivers or tremors to express as they like
β€’ if it gets too intense: take a break, extending your legs straight out,
then bring them in again and continue
β€’ change position as you see fit and continue for as long as you like

At the end, lie in a relaxed position for several minutes. Be patient and wait, even if it feels like nothing is happening. This is not an acquired skill: it is something that is already there inside you but which you have forgotten how to do. The key is to let go, to surrender.

For tips, see the official homepage or try YouTube.

Smudging: Simple and effective, this is one of the most powerful tools you can use to cleanse yourself of negative energies or influences. You will need a smudge stick, an abalone shell and matches or a lighter and a feather, all of which can be bought from most ‘new age’ shops. You can also use incense, clearing sprays, or your hand. The general idea is to sweep your body from top to toe.

How to use a sage or cedar stick:

β€’ place the stick on the shell and light the end
β€’ extinguish the flame once it has begun to smoulder
β€’ take the feather (or your hand) and wave the smoke towards you
β€’ start at your head and work your way down to your feet
β€’ relight and repeat as many times as you need to clear yourself
β€’ be mindful, taking care to stay well away from fire alarms,
thoroughly extinguishing all embers at the close

Angelic Repair: Lie in a comfortable space (ideally a quiet room on a bed or a sofa) or simply stand with your eyes closed. Ask Michael or Raphael to come to you and to heal you – removing any tension, stress, negative emotion or sensation, and any chords. Feel the weight lift as they suck the tension out of you and cut the chords. Then feel as they fill you back up with white light and stroke you down with their breath, soothing the edges of the newly severed chords. Finally, picture them embracing you in their wings and feel the power of that love.

I wish you much fun experimenting, much joy discovering and much healing and relief in the execution of these processes.

Everything is perfect

image

If the Universe could talk and if you could listen, he – she, it, the Universe – would tell you this:

“Love yourself. Forgive yourself. Give yourself a break. You are wonderful, both inside and out. You are doing so well and you are being so brave and I am honoured to be party to your journey and to be a part of what makes you unique.

Please stop worrying so much. And please, stop being so fearful. Nothing will hurt you more than you already hurt yourself.

Everything happens for a reason: it is there to guide and teach. Even heartbreak. Even hardship. Even difficulty and pain.”

“For without challenge we cannot grow. And without adversity we seldom heal. And neither do we choose to embrace the true path, the path of our destiny, the path that is our right.”

What got you here: to this page, to this blog, to this random space out of all of the numerous other random spaces on the Internet? What led you to click ‘HELLO’ when you could just as easily passed on by?

And then what led you to read when you could equally have gone: ‘NEXT’, ‘BORED NOW’or ‘TOO TIRED’… What led you to surrender? Don’t just continue… Think about it. Take a ‘time out’ to really consider it. Give that gift to yourself. Because there are no random encounters and everything happens for a reason. So if you are here, you are supposed to be here and there is something in these pages for the finding.

Maybe it’s a word? Maybe it’s a picture? Maybe it’s a piece of information about something you had forgotten or something you haven’t found out about yet? Whatever it is. And however you find it… There will be something just for you. Find it. Take it. Embrace it.

Because the Universe wants you to know that

“Everything happens for a reason,” and “right now is all there is.”

Forget about the past. It does not exist, except in your memory. Drop it and stop worrying about how you’re going to get through tomorrow.

Forget about the future. It hasn’t arrived yet. And worrying about it or attempting to manipulate it won’t help it accommodate you.

Live for right now. Live for the moment. It’s all you have. Pay attention to it and to the gifts that it offers and all will be well.

Surrender yourself instead of fighting. Embrace spontaneity, happenstance, chance and change. Allow life to step in and steer the journey.

Stop hurting. Stop avoiding. Stop hating and punishing, both other’s and yourself. Stop seeing life as a burden, yourself as a victim, situations and circumstances as things that happen to you.

Trust. Believe. Know. Everything is perfect. Everything is correct. Everything is exactly how it should actually be.

Absorb the present moment with gratefulness and wonder.

Say ‘YES’ instead of ‘NO’.

Explore. Investigate. Accept. Do.

Live with enthusiasm. Connect with sincerity. Move with confidence and passion.

Know that you are watched. Know that you are treasured. Know that you are loved.
