Words To Live By…

Happiness never derives from power over others.
And peace never comes from getting your own way.

Look, therefore, to be strong with, not strong over – this includes those in the world, those in your home; your own thoughts, feelings and emotions, and whatever else may be lurking inside your proverbial bed.

The best way to experience positive emotions, cultivate happiness and enjoy greater moments of inner peace, is to give it away. Make someone else feel good, special, important… and you become twice as good, special and important too. Make someone else feel beautiful, cherished, loved… and you become twice as beautiful, cherished and loved as well.

Give without harbouring an agenda, abandoning your need to receive or exact payment in return. Share as often and as graciously as you can, not only material objects but also your time. Include, invite, incorporate, conjoin; put together when- and -wherever possible. We were designed not only to cohabit but also to co-employ. We are are better in partnership.

It doesn’t get any purer than this, and it’s all so simple.

Scrying

1.

A pelican sits on a rock
alone in the centre of a circle,
the circle of a cup.

The Rock is like a tree,
with roots that reach into the centre,
travelling into the sea.

They descend,
like a trail of dirty water,
like the body of a snake,
like the arms of an octopus –

reaching,
stretching,
slithering,
sliming…

pushing down;
taking everything,

until the pelican is left:
master of a puddle,
lord of a stump.

2.

Turn him upside down
and he becomes an angel,
a back-to-front J.

J for Jeremial:
problem-solver,
dream-enhancer,
life-fixer,
He who helps those who are stuck.

He is also the angel of death,
but I don’t think this particular point
is applicable here;

unless the meaning is
part of what since
has passed.

3.

Above the angel is a trunk:
of rock,
of wood,
of light;

a trunk that is a portal,
to both the pelican
and God.

Standing beneath this shaft,
showering in all that comes over:
he fills his soul up,
then disappears into the All that Is.

4.

Horses gallop across the sky.
A crow complains.
A dog looks at the moon;
howls…

And in amongst it all –
in an indistinct nowhere,
in an irrelevant somewhere:

a woman unravels,
beginning to stand up.

Within our reach: joy

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in darkness, could we but see. And to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look!Life is so generous a giver. But we, judging its gifts by their covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love by wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel’s hand that brings it to you.

Everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty, believe me, that angel’s hand is there. The gift is there and the wonder of an overshadowing presence. Your joys, too, be not content with them as joys. They, too, conceal diviner gifts.

Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty beneath its covering, that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage then to claim it; that is all! But courage you have, and the knowledge that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country home.”
